On the last Friday, 5 years passed from 11th March 2011. I really remember that day clearly, I was working at a call center, making calls to sell something to our customers. At 14:46, Suddenly, The huge shake hit our office, things inside the office were ruined, and the wall was cracked. We crawled under the desk and endured the fear patiently during the shake. After a few minutes (Wikipedia said 6min but I felt it was much longer), the shake has calmed down and we went out of the building. The manager of my work stopped work and I immediately went to buy a beer and drank it with my coworker (I apologize for it.) But when I got to Shinjuku station and looked up at the big electronic billboard, I realized the seriousness of the situation. The billboard reported around 375km north, away from Tokyo, the blazing town, the town which was swallowed up by the Tsunami, people who struggled to run away, and the number of the death tolls continued to increase. It was like in a movie about the end of the world and didn’t look real.
The happened called the 2011 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tōhoku -東北地方太平洋沖地震 Tōhoku-chihō Taiheiyō Oki Jishin (referred to in Japan as the Great East Japan earthquake -東日本大震災 Higashi Nihon Daishinsai) was magnitude 9.0 undersea megathrust earthquake off the coast of Japan. It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded to have hit Japan, and the fourth most powerful earthquake in the world since modern record-keeping began in 1900. The earthquake triggered powerful Tsunami wave that reached heights of up to 40.5 meters (133ft) in Miyako in Tōhoku’s Iwate Prefecture, and which, in the Sendai area, traveled up to 10km (6mi) inland. On 10 March 2015, a Japanese National Police Agency report confirmed 15,894 deaths, 6,152 injured, and 2,562 people missing across twenty prefectures, as well as 228,863 people living away from their home in either temporary housing or due to permanent relocation. -refer to Wikipedia
As soon as I watched the billboard, I was running to my town called Shimokitazawa (5.5km from Shinjuku) I should do something, I thought that and I was supposed to distribute a cup of miso soup among the people who were in trouble with the train delay, but the area around Shimokitazawa was so calm. I held a charity drawing portrait, people who I drew their portrait gave me a contribution on 4 different towns and I donated that and my own books for Tōhoku. Then also, I visited Ishinomaki, Miyagi (West part of Tōhoku) to distribute some commodities after 1 month from that earthquake and I also experienced a huge aftershock and I understood how scary it is while I was listening to a Tsunami warning. Of course, I wanted to give their portrait but I couldn’t say by myself. But some kid came to me with his mom and ask me to draw his portrait because he saw my book which I distributed with the soup kitchen. Then I draw all the kids from a shelter and I was glad that I could see them smile and they looked energetic. Also, I visited that place 2 more times to work as a volunteer and I helped remove debris left by the disaster.
5 years passed from that day, How is everything for everybody I met in Ishinomaki Miyagi? From what I’ve searched on the internet so far, it’s gonna be a restoration and I hope that everybody is fine. But to turn my eyes toward on another disaster- hit area, It seems that it still hasn’t been able to recover. Especially, Fukushima where they had the nuclear accidents at the nuclear power plant and the radioactivity still leaks out.
The Tsunami caused nuclear accidents, primarily the level 7meltdouns at three reactors in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant complex, and the associated evacuation zones affecting hundreds of thousands of residents. Many electrical generators were taken down, and at least, three nuclear reactors suffered explosions due to hydrogen gas that had built up within their outer containment buildings after cooling system failure resulting from the loss of electrical power. -refer to Wikipedia
Honestly, I wanted to write about the present situation of Fukushima but I can’t talk about all those things with you because this topic is so difficult due to my lack of English skills, just as the post “My thoughts on terrorism” I wrote before. If I searched with Japanese site, I can’t translate in English, and If I search with an English site, I can’t understand what they’re saying. The first, I have no idea which site tells me the truth and if I say something wrong to you, it might be a big problem. But if the site which I read is true, the problem is beyond all imagination. Even now when 5 years passed from that day, tons of radioactivity are leaking out every moment and more than 7,000 people are working at the Fukushima nuclear power plant for settling the situation, but they don’t even know how to do it. However, the most dangerous point is that I couldn’t make sure how much radioactivity will affect a human body. Also, If the site which I read is true, they mention the changes will be seen this year when 5 years turn from that day, because of that, the government split radioactive rubble or foodstuffs from there to all over Japan so that they are not to blame for the radioactive cause if it happens.
Of course, I don’t know which information is true, but the most strangest thing about searching the present situation of Fukushima was why I couldn’t know that. From that day, I started to distrust the government and media because I realized that the government conceals facts which are inconvenient to them. They handle Japanese media, conceal facts and they make convenient fictions or make us forget the problem. In consequence, They try to restart the nuclear reactors even if they don’t know how dangerously it might affect the human body and how long it’s gonna be to settle the radiation leak, Even if a lot of Japanese people held a demonstration against this nuclear problem. I guess It is because certain persons want to get tons of profit. But what is the point of getting money by deceiving people, destroying nature or killing animals?
Finally, I want to apologize to all of you because I can’t write for sure because I don’t have a good English skill and enough time for searching. But the biggest reason for my apology is for the Japanese government which doesn’t say the truth and conceals facts which are inconvenient to them. I tried searching with a lot of words for researching the truth about the Fukushima problem and about what the Japanese government did to the world. But I couldn’t find the fact of my current Japanese Prime Minister apologizing about this problem to the world.
I’m sorry about that.
This is not only a Japanese problem. We are destroying the nature and killing a lot of animals from all over the world, and also a lot of people are still living in Fukushima, and it’s impossible for them to move somewhere or who are working for settling the situation.
From now, We should disclose the true information all over the world and find a solution for this problem without any more delay. Also, we should decommission all nuclear reactors (Japan has 54 nuclear power plants, even though Japan has around 2,000 times earthquake for one year) and develop renewable energy and convert nuclear power to it. I can understand it is such a long way, and I’m also using energy from them for living my life and writing this sentence. Especially, I’m not in Japan now and I don’t think that I can change Japanese government. But I should try to find the truth with my eyes and my brain, then I should share my opinion and idea of the solution. What is done cannot be undone, the important thing is learning from this failure, never do the same mistake again and make a good future for the world. I’m sure that We Japanese will be able to do it in the next 5 years, and that’s why god gave us difficulties to overcome and grow ourself.
